Flag
City Balloonfest is a local hot air balloon competition where 30
pilots compete for points and prizes through flying performance in
reaching predetermined targets.
The
pilots are given the longitude and latitude coordinates of a
defined target and must determine their launch site that will give
them the best opportunity in reaching the target.
Once at the
target they drop a marker as close as possible. The distance to
the center of the target is then measured and and entered into a
computer program which then generates the point scoring system.
Pilots may have multiple task to complete on a single flight.
Flights are
scheduled in the early morning and late afternoon when the winds
are calm. Hot air balloon flying can only take place when the
winds are below 10 mph. In the evenings the pilots return the the
main site to once again set up their balloons to perform an
evening illumination for the crowd's enjoyment.
This
is the Premier Event of the summer that you definitely won't want
to miss.
